Designers/Alex & Janet
Alexandra has had a lifelong fascination with human sexuality. After earning her MA in Clinical Psychology she decided she wanted to take a more tactical approach to helping women everywhere achieve optimal sexual + self-pleasure.
Janet earned her Mechanical Engineering degree from MIT in 2007, and has designed everything from 3D printers to dustpans. She's now a sex toy engineer.
Enter Dame Products — which Alex & Janet co-founded that makes toys for sex and aims to close the pleasure gap in the process.
Dame has run two of the most successful sex toy crowdfunding campaigns bringing a total of over $900K between the two.
They believe sex toys should satisfy real women’s real needs. Instead of starting with a flashy feature or a kooky shape, they begin their design process with focus groups and scientific research. If it doesn’t fit into your sex life, then it doesn’t fit on their roadmap. They're trying to make the world a happier place, one vagina at a time.
How do they do it?
They start with you. When it came time to think about their next product, they went back to early surveys of Eva users, containing feedback from 1446 vulva-havers and 499 penis-havers. Their reasons for loving Eva frequently cited “closeness,” “togetherness,” and that they could use their hands naturally.
It was time to dust off our glue guns and warm up the 3D printers for some DIY vibrator fun.
They developed twelve physical concepts, each one worn or held on the hand by very different methods. Having real objects to discuss helped organize the conversation. Which qualities seemed most valuable? Which were deal-breakers? It quickly became obvious that awkward concepts weren’t popular. What else could they learn?
In surveys and interviews, they discussed everything from vibration strength to aesthetics, asking people to describe what they want in a final product. They weighted their responses according to what they felt was most important, bringing us to the rough design that would become Fin.
With a single idea in hand, they sent Fin prototypes to their tester pool to help them perfect the details. Right- and left-handed, solo and coupled, ages 20 to 65 — they tested prototypes with as many different types of people as possible.
With these testers’ help, they fine-tuned small details and caught hidden gotchas to ensure they make the best vibrator for women and couples that they could.
They don’t want to put anything on your nightstand without your approval!
